Graz is the capital of Styria and with a population of 280.000 people second-largest city in Austria after Vienna. It is situated on the Mur River in the southeast of Austria, about 200 km southwest of Vienna.
Graz has a long tradition as a "university town": its six universities have more than 44,000 students. Its "Old Town" is one of the best-preserved city centres in Central Europe. No other city offers so much variety within such a small area, together with its sunny southern ambience as a bonus: futuristic architecture right next to medieval houses set in a maze of ancient alleyways and squares. Maybe the most famous sight in Graz is the Schloßberg, a hill dominating the old town (475m high), with a great view over Graz.
This diversity and creative vision are the reason why Graz was named a UNESCO City of Design.
Then and now Graz was attracting famous people from the hole world with its special charm. The astronomer Johannes Kepler lived here for a short period. Later Nikola Tesla decided to study electrical engineering in Graz.
If you thought you’d already seen everything, then think again: just take a look around the unique city of Graz and you will be amazed!
